Description

The Nautical Institute is looking for a Technical Adviser to support its publications.

The Nautical Institute is looking for a passionate and experienced Technical Adviser to join our London-based Information and Publications Department. You will assist in developing the portfolio of publications and
sourcing articles for our journals including our flagship magazine Seaways. You will have sea-going cargo experience and knowledge of the issues faced by ships'
staff – particularly those on the bridge. The post entails liaising with a multi-national pool of authors, peer reviewers, industry experts and organisations.


Applicants should hold a relevant maritime qualification and preferably a degree. Seagoing experience is necessary as is the ambition to help shape the industry for the future.
An attractive benefits package is offered including a starting salary of about £35,000 and a non-contributory pension scheme of 9% of salary after successful completion of probation. The position is based at the London
office, although blended working options may be considered, and some international travel will be necessary. Proficiency in English and computer literacy are essential. You must prove your eligibility to work in the UK before
you will be considered for interview.



Requirements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the NI technical strategy for publications
  • Identify industry issues that impact on NI work or membership interests that should be addressed in NI publications
  • Prepare briefing notes and business plans for publications
  • Liaise and, where appropriate, cooperate with other NGOs, IGOs and flag states

TECHNICAL

  • Provide technical advice to the NI publications department
  • Liaise with NI staff, authors, peer reviewers, members, branches, industry experts, the IMO, industry forums and the NI Technical Committee on technical issues, as appropriate
  • Identify and encourage articles on technical issues for Seaways and other NI publications
  • Manage technical discussions using social media and correspondence groups
  • Conduct research and investigate specified areas of interest.

GENERAL

  • Support publications and other departments with technical advice
  • Consider how to present information – books and other products
  • Assist with NI conferences and events, such as technical seminars and book launches, as appropriate
  • Provide support for book development
  • Ensure that industry technical advice on the NI website is current and accurate
  • Represent the NI at appropriate forums on an international basis
  • Encourage membership
  • General support for other Institute activities.


PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL

  • Professional maritime qualification
  • Recent seagoing experience
  • Understanding of the maritime industry
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good understanding of elements of the maritime industry and of IMO and flag state rules and regulations
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work using own initiative
  • Time management and organisational skills
  • Proactive approach
  • Ability to write in a clear and structured way
  • Multi-cultural awareness
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.

PREFFERED

  • Excellent standard of education to degree level in a suitable marine discipline
  • Knowledge of online meeting programs and experience in running them
  • ICT skills and knowledge
  • Experience in using social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook
  • Knowledge of Eventbrite and MailChimp systems
  • Multi-lingual.
