Position details: Full Time Contract (14 months)

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for a Development Officer, Engagement and Events, Ontario Region to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.

Position Summary

The Development Officer, Engagement and Events assumes a significant role in the coordination and execution of events, donor stewardship activities and corporate engagement to further the mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and to support NCC’s fundraising goals in Ontario.  

Reporting to the Senior Development Officer and working closely with the Ontario Development and Communications team, the Development Officer plays a key role in the planning and implementation of Ontario Region events, ensures timely stewardship communications with major donors including regular reports, recognition events and customized recognition opportunities, and is responsible for corporate partner engagement and activation. 

The successful candidate is creative, a self-starter, well-organized, is eager to add value, and will work well as part of a team to help identify goals, objectives, efficiencies and best practices to deliver a successful events program and donor stewardship and cultivation activities across Ontario. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Ontario Events Management and Coordination: 40% 

  • Work with the Development and Communications team to identify strategies that support regional fundraising goals 
  • Develop a yearly business plan and expense budget for Ontario’s events program 
  • Develop, oversee, and execute processes for event logistics and timelines  
  • Effectively project manage duties delegated to staff and other business units, including (but not limited to) production and mailing of invitations, registration form development, social media and other communications, building participant bios, and day-of logistics 
  • Lead and implement a robust outreach plan, work with Development team and key volunteers to build guest lists, fill events, and manage RSVP lists 
  • Work with Development staff to solicit event sponsorship and gift-in-kind donations as required 
  • Manage relationships with venues, caterers and other event vendors, and process invoices in a timely manner 
  • Lead post-event strategies, ensuring timely communication, touchpoints and coordinated support to fundraisers 
  • Conduct reports to help develop ongoing plans and evaluate program value and objectives 
  • Provide event-related administrative support such as data entry in Raisers Edge database, responding to or fielding participant and donor enquiries, printing name tags and preparing other event materials, and maintaining an inventory of event materials 

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: 30% 

  • Work with the Development team to create an improved donor experience by coordinating cultivation and stewardship activities for all levels and types of Ontario supporters 
  • Ensure timely communication with donors by adhering to a donor stewardship workback plan and other timelines set by the Development and Communications team 
  • Lead and coordinate the creation and dissemination of donor impact reports  
  • Lead the process of annually updating Ontario donor recognition preferences 
  • Coordinate the production of donor deliverables such as plaques and other recognition pieces 
  • Coordinate engagement activities for the Ontario Ambassadors’ Circle program (current and former Board and committee members) 
  • Help develop and refine the stewardship plan to ensure donor satisfaction, retention, and conversion 

Corporate Engagement and Activation: 20% 

  • Work with NCC Ontario region’s Development team to ensure marketing deliverables such as social media posts, onsite event activation and employee engagement activities are activated for Ontario corporate partnerships 
  • Ensure organizational standards are met and implemented in regional corporate strategies 
  • Organize and coordinate employee engagement activities for Ontario corporate partners 

Sub-regional Event Support: 10% 

  • Maintain database of all outreach and engagement events within the province and ensure regional events reporting is up-to-date 
  • Assist sub-regional staff with event planning and logistics as needed 
  • Create and maintain event templates and resources to be used by region 
  • Maintain a database of event vendors, speakers and other contacts across the province 
  • Conduct events training for Ontario region staff as necessary 

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Development Officer and the Director of Development and Communications. 


Helpful qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in a development role including event coordination
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Raiser’s Edge (or similar fundraising database) 
  • Good verbal and written communications skills 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and proactively solve problems independently and with a team 
  • Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations  
  • An appreciation for and willingness to learn about the mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada 
  • Ability to work and travel within a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and evenings 
  • Interest and openness to equity, diversity, and inclusion in both internal and external-facing work duties 
  • A valid Ontario Drivers’ License is necessary
