In this role you will contribute to the core outputs of the Maritime Countermeasures Section, conducting future-looking countermeasures research to maintain the combat capability of RNZN platforms against the evolving Anti-Ship Missile Defence threat.

This position has a strong customer focus; assessing RNZN requirements, developing and planning new research directions, providing technical leadership and guidance with DTA and to the customer, and undertaking and managing research activities.

On offer is the opportunity to develop a long term career as a Defence Scientist with the Defence Technology Agency based in Devonport. Therefore the position is suitable for a person who is just completing their post graduate studies in a STEM subject or has been in the workforce for up to 5 years.

The Electronic Warfare Systems (EWS) group is a team of approximately 18 personnel that provides advice to the NZDF on all aspects of Electromagnetic Warfare and Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations. Our work covers the doctrinal areas of electronic support (sensing), electronic protection and electronic attack. Our group contains four sections: Air Warfare, Navigation Warfare and Counter-Autonomy, Radio Frequency (RF) Electronic Warfare, and Maritime Countermeasures.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.

We are seeking a motivated and capable individual with scientific, engineering, and technical expertise that can be applied to the fields of Anti-Ship Missile Defence and Electronic Warfare who will take responsibility for their personal scientific outputs and those of others that may be placed under their task-based management.

As mentioned the role has as strong customer focus which requires confident communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to develop relationships and drive analysis programs with NZDF and externally.

You will hold a tertiary level qualification in an appropriate STEM subject area with a minimum of honours (four years study including a research project) or equivalent. An appropriate post-graduate qualification would be highly desirable.
